KU researchers are utilizing bugs to fight osteoarthritis. Flour beetles are being studied asa way to heal cartilage by utilizing a synthetic material inspired by the beetles.
In a KU lab, Gehrke taps a few red flour beetles out of a glass jar.
It’s not the material but the structure that makes beetle skeletons way stronger thansimilar synthetics. “Cartilage is a tissue in the body that doesn’t heal very well,” explains Gehrke.
